Another very popular style in our extensive range is the Vintage Over-dyed Patchwork Rug. These knotted-pile rugs, which are constructed from smaller pieces cut from different rugs sewn together to create a larger piece, are very much sought after due to their unique visual appeal and contemporary color palette.
Each over-dyed patchwork rug in our range is one-of-a-kind. We personally travel throughout Turkey, Iran and other Middle Eastern countries to select vintage, hand-woven wool rugs which are suitable for upcycling as over-dyed rugs, with carefully attention paid to the quality of original materials and workmanship, the visual appeal of the designs and motifs and the colors most suitable for re-dying.
We take great care with the preparation of every overdyed patchwork rug and personally oversee each stage of the process. Firstly, we select suitable individual rugs and carefully hand-wash each to remove and residual dirt and stains. Next, the pile on each rug is sheared to a uniform depth. From each rug smaller, rectangular pieces are cut and immersed in a dye bath as each piece takes up the dye at a different intensity, many shades and hues of the main color.are achieved, We then sew a lining to the back each piece to ensure stability, sew the individual pieces together with wool dyed in the same color-bath and, finally, attach a strong backing fabric to the finished piece.
In the finished piece the original background design pattern of each carpet is visible through the new, usually monochrome, surface color. As several different carpets have been used to create each rug, the overall effect is one of visually pleasing shade and pattern variations.
